"I come from a proud family that has been involved with public service for as long as I can remember. I want to work for you. With nearly a decade of government experience, I know what it takes to find solutions, navigate the complicated governmental agencies, and get things done." -Veronica Vela Whitacre

Revitalization and Urban Development
As McAllen continues to grow, we must make sure all parts of the city are able to develop with urban living in mind. By rezoning areas for mixed-use purposes, we can create more housing, retail, entertainment, and green spaces that will generate more property and sales tax revenue for McAllen. This will provide access to urban style living for our community, pushing our economy forward as a progressive municipality in Hidalgo County.
As we work through the COVID-19 pandemic, our plans need to adapt to the current and new information we receive on this devastating virus. I plan to assist struggling local businesses with targeted support and need-based plans, stimulate new and existing business growth through existing grant incentives, and develop protocols and procedures to help McAllen citizens navigate any pandemic or health care crisis effectively.
City Codes and Ordinances
It is time for us to review and revise decades-old city codes and ordinances to streamline processes for business owners, builders, and community leaders. McAllen must be accessible and forward-thinking as we continue to lead the RGV as a progressive city. We are the hub for the Upper Valley and must keep our city codes and ordinances up to date and relevant. Let’s keep McAllen moving forward with conscious development and procedures.
Arts and Culture
For our society to continue flourishing academically and culturally we cannot forget about the fine arts. During my time on the commission, we opened the McAllen Performing Arts Center and have supported our local museums. It is time for us to expand cultural events in every McAllen district and promote the talented local artists we have right here in our community. Arts and culture allow us to develop and appreciate new skills while broadening our view of history, diversity, and awareness of the world.
McAllen is home to world-class birding centers, beautiful parks, and a growing network of hike and bike trails. As your Mayor, I plan to keep the environment in mind by improving the recycling program participation, maintaining our parks, and continuing to develop more green space throughout the city. I want McAllen to be a leader in sustainable living with self-sustaining park systems, conscious hike and bike trail infrastructure, and a better appreciation for the beautiful landscape we have here in South Texas.
We have one of the largest animal intake facilities in the nation right here in Hidalgo County. It is crucial that we work with our local animal welfare organizations to bring progressive animal welfare to McAllen. I want to make our city a safe place for animals and for our citizens by working to reduce our stray population through rehoming and adoption programs. Let’s set the example as a no-kill city and move McAllen forward.
